Begin Again Horse Rescue was established as a 501c3 charity in 2009, when a small group of three private horse rescuers decided to organize to make more of an impact in saving horses at risk of neglect, abuse, and possible slaughter. Over the past 10 year, the organization has grown to fulfill this dream, having become a well respected, award winning and accredited horse rescue. They are situated on a 28 acre facility which includes capacity for 14 horses in box stalls, indoor exercise arena, round pen, run in sheds, quarantine areas, dry lot paddocks and large, grassy pastures. The rescue is completely run by volunteers and is supported by donations, fundraisers and occasional grants. In 2018, Begin Again Tack Shop was started in one room of the local community center and now occupies it's own building in nearby Hemlock, NY. This is an outlet for used tack, clothing and supplies to be donated and sold. All proceeds go back to support the horses of the rescue and all donations are tax deductible. It also is completely run by volunteers.
The horses of Begin Again Horse Rescue come mainly from owner surrenders, but as space allows, the rescue will pull horses from local kill pen auctions as well. When law enforcement in area counties have horses involved in cruelty cases, they often come to Begin Again to wait for court proceedings, get rehabilitation and eventually become available for adoption. All breeds and types of equines are welcome, from miniatures to drafts, including donkeys and mules! All horses get a thorough examination by a veterinarian upon intake, and are brought current on all health care. A rehabilitation plan is put in place, if needed, and when they are ready training is started for those who are physically able. Begin Again Horse Rescue is not a sanctuary, so all horses are placed for adoption. The horses of Begin Again are adopted on a Permanent Lease Agreement, which means that the rescue retains ownership of all horses. This is truly the only way to be sure these horses are never sold or given away to a secondary party. If a horse is no longer wanted, cannot be cared for, or just doesn't work out, it must be returned to the rescue. There is a 2 hour adoption limit from Lima, NY for all potential homes.
