Adirondack Park Agency - Boreas Pond Tract Info
The Adirondack Park Agency - Boreas Pond Tract info and how you can help.
October 17, 2016
New York State recently added over 20,000 acres of land to the Adirondack Preserve. It is called Boreas Pond Tract. This land is in the process of being classified by the Adirondack Park Agency(APA). This is one of the things the APA does. The big question is will it be, “Wild Forest,” which allows mechanized uses sudh as cars, trucks, and horse trailers or will it be, “Wilderness,” which allows no mechanized use.
Right now the Department of Environmental Conservation(DEC) has an interim plan in place. This plan opens 3.2 miles of road to traffic. Bicycles get access to 6.7 miles. Horses and wagons get access to 25 miles of road. Paddlers must carry their crafts over 2.5 miles mostly up hill to get access to the water. Hikers, hunters, and fishermen may walk wherever they wish to walk.
The classification will have a huge impact on who may and does use the land. If it is Wilderness only foot traffic is permitted. If it is Wild Forest many more users will be able to enjoy this land. Of particular interest to equestrians is the possibility of facilities for day or overnight use with parking for rigs and stalls for horses. This would be similar to the facilities at Otter Creek and Brookfield.
The only way we can get a new facility built is if the land is classified Wild Forest. To do this we must convince the APA that lots of people think it is important to them. We can do this best in two ways. We can attend the APA’s public hearings and we can send them comments before the comment period closes.
Several environmental and user groups have already formed to promote the Wilderness option. If they are successful only a very small number of hearty users will every have access to the land.
